Skellefteå Budokan and Visual Magic collaborate to visualize martial arts in 3D.
During the second semester of Visual Magic’s training for VFX artists, the focus was on Motion Capture and Virtual Production. The VFX20 class then got to use one of Campus Skellefteå’s two (!) professional Motion Capture studios to record movements from the budo sports of Karate, Kendo, Iaido and Aikido. Our 25 VFX artists, divided into covid-adapted groups of five students and two teachers, had to do everything. What does it all mean? To name a few, the students had to rig up 16 Micus M3 from Qualisys, calibrate the system, build props with reflective markers (see picture on the right), direct and control the recording and wash the result in Motion Builder, etc. The purpose, in addition to learning of course, was to document movements that can be used when the students animate their own characters. To make it truly a win-win, part of the proceeds from the day will be used for commercials for the above-mentioned betting sports. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see the results in the future!
Qualisys user of the month June 2021!
The Gothenburg company Qualisys is a world leader in several Mocap segments and has delivered the equipment (16 Qualisys M3) to our studio,
There, during the spring semester 2021, VFX20 has done everything from mocap of martial arts to advanced art projects and helped with medical research in stroke rehabilitation. There is hardly any other education that has these opportunities.
The initiative was also named ”Qualisys User of the Month, June 2021” which we are of course very proud of.

World-class Japanese martial arts – right on our Campus!
On Campus Skellefteå you will find one of the best training centers for Japanese martial arts in the Western world: Skellefteå Budokan.
Budokan is a collaborative project between six budo clubs in Skellefteå. In the basement of the Campushallen, training is offered in all the city’s budo styles. A space of over 1000 m2 houses three traditional Japanese dojos with training in, among other things: Aikido, Iaido, Jodo, Judo, Jujutsu, Kendo, Kyudo and Karate (Shotokan and Kyokushin). In other words, this is something our students can delve into even more – but in their free time. We like that!
